A Local’s Guide to the Blue Ridge Bucket List
Welcome to Blue Ridge, Georgia—our slice of Appalachian paradise. Whether you’re here for the crisp mountain air, the crystal-clear waters, or the charming small-town vibe, there’s an energy here you won’t find anywhere else.
As locals, we get asked constantly: "What’s the one thing we have to do?" Truthfully, there isn't just one. There is a collection of essential experiences that make up the heart and soul of North Georgia.
We call it the Blue Ridge Bucket List.
We’ve pulled together the top 10 items that every visitor needs to tick off to truly say they’ve experienced Blue Ridge. But we’re not just giving you a list; We’re giving you the local inside scoop—the when, the where, and the "fun advice" that separates the tourists from the travelers. Grab your gear; we’re going on an adventure.
1. Ride the Rails: The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway
The heart of our downtown is the historic depot. Taking the train isn’t just for kids; it’s a four-hour immersion into the history of the Toccoa River valley.
The Route: You’ll wind through the forest to the sister towns of McCaysville, GA, and Copperhill, TN.
Local’s Fun Advice: Always book the open-air car. The breeze off the river is unmatched. While you're in McCaysville, stand on the "Blue Line"—you can literally have one foot in Georgia and one in Tennessee.
You might get two extra credit points towards the Brewery Pub Crawl by visiting Buck Bald Brewery and Copperhill Brewery during your stop.
2. Pick Your Peak: Fruit Picking at Mercier Orchards
You haven't been to Blue Ridge until you’ve had a fried pie from Mercier’s. This is one of the largest family-owned orchards in the Southeast.
The Vibe: Depending on the season, you can pick strawberries, blueberries, peaches, or apples.
Local’s Fun Advice: After you fill your basket, head to their Hard Cider Tasting Room. They use their own fruit to craft the cider, and it’s the perfect way to reward yourself after a "hard" day in the fields.
Our Favorites: Chocolate covered Coconut Creme and the OG Apple Pie.

3. Chase a High Score: Pinball at Vertigo
For a break from the sun (or a rainy day savior), head to Vertigo Pinball on Main Street. It's a "pay by the hour" paradise.
The Game: They have a massive collection of retro and modern machines. No quarters required!
Local’s Fun Advice: Order a local craft beer from their tap, find the Jurassic Park or Medieval Madness machine, and try to get your initials on the leaderboard. It’s louder and more fun than you remember.
Local Insight: They have one of the best Smash Burgers in Town. Friday night specials and live music is new!

4. Wet a Line: Catch a North Georgia Trout
Blue Ridge is officially the Trout Capital of Georgia. Our cold mountain streams are teeming with Rainbow, Brown, and Brook trout.
The Spot: Whether it's the Toccoa River or Noontootla Creek, the fishing is world-class.
Local’s Fun Advice: If you’re a novice, don't go it alone. Hire a guide for a half-day wade trip. They know exactly what's biting and where the "honey holes" are.
5. Hike to the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge
This is the longest swinging bridge east of the Mississippi, stretching 270 feet across the Toccoa River.
The Trek: It’s a short, relatively easy 0.8-mile hike to get there, but the bridge itself is the star.
Local’s Fun Advice: The bridge does swing. If you’re with a group, try to walk in rhythm to get a little bounce going—just don’t scare the hikers coming the other way!
Local’s Opinion: Bring a sandwich from Bites by Ferraro and a bottle of wine from 34th Degree Wine.
6. Get Weird: Find Bigfoot at Expedition: Bigfoot!
Believe it or not, North Georgia is a hotspot for Sasquatch sightings. This museum is one of the most unique roadside attractions in the country.
The Exhibit: It’s full of "evidence," footprint casts, and a massive life-sized Bigfoot.
Local’s Fun Advice: Go with an open mind. Even if you’re a skeptic, the "Sasquatch Theater" is fascinating. It’s campy, fun, and 100% Blue Ridge.
7. Fuel Up: Coffee at Mountain Mama’s
Located just outside the main downtown hustle, Mountain Mama’s is where the locals go to caffeinate.
The Scene: It’s cozy, friendly, and serves some of the best breakfast biscuits in the county.
Local’s Fun Advice: Grab a "Mountain Latte" and sit on the porch. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch some local trail gossip. It’s the best way to start a Saturday morning.
Local News: Recently remodeled and a top contender for best coffee in town!
8. Float Your Cares Away: Tubing the Toccoa
In the summer, the Toccoa River becomes a slow-moving highway of neon-colored tubes.
The Experience: It’s a 1.5 to 2-hour float down a gentle, scenic stretch of river.
Local’s Fun Advice: Rent a "cooler tube" for your drinks. Hydration is key! Also, wear cheap sunglasses—the river likes to "collect" expensive ones if you fall in.

9. The Brewery Crawl: A Beer at Every Local Spot
Blue Ridge has a burgeoning craft beer scene. To check this off the list, you have to visit our three staples.
The Lineup: Grumpy Old Men Brewing, Tipping Point Brewing Company, and Angry Hops Brewing.
Local’s Fun Advice: Spread this out over a weekend! Start at Grumpy Old Men for the atmosphere and Thursday’s for Karaoke, then hit Tipping Point’s balcony for their view of a local parade. Angry Hops are super LEO and Veteran supporters and have a great patio as well.
10. Join the Party: Local Festivals & Parades
Small-town life is built around our celebrations. From the Fireman’s Parade to the Blues & BBQ Festival, there’s always a reason to gather.
The Event: Check the calendar for the Blue Ridge Blues & BBQ Festival or the Old Timer’s Parade. If there is a holiday, there is bound to be a parade in town.
Local’s Fun Advice: Bring a lawn chair and get to East Main Street early. The best spots for the parades fill up fast, and you’ll want a front-row seat for the community spirit.
